The Canon 7SZ
The Canon 7SZ was made between 196 & 1968. It was an uphgrade on the 7s in a couple of areas. A new improved and brighter viewfinder was intgroduced (although all the 7 viewfinders were class leaders anyway), a larger rewind knob was introduced and the rangefinder adjustmeny porthole was moved on the toplate to make it more accessible. The built in shutter speed coupled CDS meter that required a battery remained and this camera is viewd as close to perfection the camera was ever going to be. It was certainly the most innovative and class leading rangefinder ever built.
Larger than the P with many innovations it was a big success at the time. All the P/7/7s have a metal foil shutter, which was a huge innvation at the time and was deployed to avoid the sun burn holes often found in cloth shutters of the time. They often show slight wrinkles, this is normal and nothing to be concerned about, it has no detrimental effect on exposures.
The Canon 50mm f1.4 lens
The Leica Thread Mount Canon 50mm f/1.4 manufactured from 1957 to 1972 is widely referred to as the Japanese Summilux. This is both deserved praise and a disservice. Praise because it speaks to its optical quality, and a disservice because it subtly implies that the Canon was nothing more than a Japanese copy of the German original. However, Canon’s 50mm predates Leica’s venerable lens by about two years and to mamny offers superior performance. Even today this lens is revered and highly sought after.
